Orbitz.com: My Review

An update in September 2013: The following original post was published in December 2006. Years later, the information is still relevant. I have personally booked many travels with Orbitz and am quite happy. One promise I do intend to keep is to write reviews on other travel websites. So please keep an eye on my blog and come back often!

Original Post:

Starting with this post, I will review some websites where I usually book my travel. These reviews are completely based on my past experiences as a customer, and I do NOT endorse any merchant being reviewed, nor do I get paid directly by any merchant.
Orbitz is the website I use the most to find and/or book travel. Its strengths include:
  • It is versatile: Besides plane tickets, it lets you book hotels, cars, activities, or any combination of those. When booking flights, you can have the choice of booking round-trip, one-way or multi-city tickets. On its homepage, you can find some specially targeted deals, like "students going on spring break", "fun family getaways", "gay & lesbian travel deals", etc.
  • Flexibility: If your travel dates are flexible, it will show you the lowest price in the 3-day window (requested date, the day before, and the day after). When booking a package (flight + hotel), it will let you choose a combination of the flight and the hotel, based on flight schedule, hotel location, hotel rating and amenities.
  • Ticket protector: We know the lowest priced deals are often non-refundable deals, meaning if you change or cancel your travel, you have to pay a fee (often $100, sometimes $50). With Orbitz's ticket protector, however, you can rest assured that your change/cancellation penalty is covered, provided you change/cancel your travel due to medical emergencies.
  • Flight status alert: You can set up flight status alert to be sent to your mobile phone or via email. If for some reason your flight is delayed or cancelled (we have had some pretty serious snow storms so far this winter), you will get a message on your phone.
Areas for improvements:
  • The toll-free customer service number has long wait time.
  • You pay Orbitz some commission if you book via them.
